Biodiesel
Commonly made from a chemical reaction between lipids (such as vegetable oil or animal fat) and alcohol, biodiesel is a long-chain alkyl esters fuel with high lubricating properties. Biodiesel can either be used alone or blended at any level with petrodiesel, which is acceptable in the most recent diesel engines. This technology creates higher cetane levels and extends the lifetime of the vehicle’s power equipment by being a better lubricant than the regular diesel fuel.
While being increasingly used in the United States for quite a long time now, Europe has just recently been targeted by an agreement – the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation – that requires fuel suppliers to include a 5% portion of renewable fuel in the overall fuel sold on the European Union by 2010.
